Background Information
Description

Canopy Piloting is a high-speed discipline involving small and very agile parachutes and highly trained pilots to fly them. The discipline involves a series of tasks designed to test a parachutist’s ability to control the canopy and fly accurately.

The athletes accelerate their parachutes by flying one or more steep turns in the air and then plain out over the surface of the water to enter the course.

Four parts define the champion of canopy piloting, with competitions in Accuracy, Speed, Distance and Freestyle.

Goal

All 12 flights, three per competition event, will bring a final score.

Athletes will be ranked at the end, with the lowest aggregated score of all 12 results determining the Champion.

Format

- All athletes participate in the whole competition.

- Each competitor will make three attempts at each event (speed, accuracy, distance, freestyle). Each of the 12 attempts will result in a ranking list.

- Competitors get points for each attempt as per ranking.

- The best athletes after all attempts will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Rundown

Athletes will jump out of an aeroplane or helicopter from a height of 1200 - 1500 m and open their parachutes. When they are above the course, they will make high-powered turns to gain speed before entering the course on the pond. Athletes pass the entry gate, below 1.5 meters, with part of the body to start scoring. Each task starts with the parachutist navigating through a number of gates, which are situated on water. The parachutist has one of four goals, depending on the task:
- In Accuracy, the competitor must successfully navigate the course while dragging water, then lift and land as close to the centre of the target as possible. 
- In Speed, the goal is to fly as fast as possible while carving between and staying below the course markers.
- In Distance, the competitor will fly his parachute so that he will land at the maximum distance.
- In Freestyle, the athletes perform artistic manoeuvres while flying their parachute while in contact with (dragging) the water. The most difficult artistic manoeuvres are achieved in a perfect body position followed by a stand-up landing that is the ultimate goal in Freestyle.

Judging

To start competition, the maximum allowable wind speed as measured by an anemometer is 7 m/s in any direction, except for Zone Accuracy where it is 5 m/s in any direction.

In Accuracy, water points are earned when competitors drag one foot through an imaginary line in the water between markers. Athletes pass between the course markers and stay within the course to gain points. All land points are collected if the athlete lands standing up in the central zone.

The Speed course describes a carve of 75° and is 70 m long. The time is started by breaking an electronic beam across the entry gate of the course. The competitor's time is stopped as they break a second beam across the exit gate, and their time is measured to a thousandth of a second.

For Distance, the athlete starts at the entry gate and scores water points when they drag one foot through an imaginary line in the water between markers. He keeps his canopy flying as far as possible. The competitor will be scored on the first point of contact with the surface. The distance is measured from the entry gate to the first point of contact with the ground.

Freestyle is performing pre-declared artistic maneuvers while flying at high speed in contact with the water and landing in a stand-up on the shore. This is scored by a panel of judges, considering the difficulty of the artistic maneuver in combination with the execution and the artistic style.

Scoring

Accuracy, the competitor must successfully navigate the water section before landing as close to the centre of the target as possible. Extra ‘gate’ points are earned when a competitor drags a part of their body (usually their foot) through an imaginary line on the surface of the water between water gates.

Distance, competitor must drag water before the entrance gate. The will receive water points for draging water at each of the 7 gates. Then fly below the gate at 70m and then rise up and fly as far as then can. Where they land is the distance score that they achieve.

Spreed, drag water before the entry gate. Enter the course below the entrance gate and start the timing sensor fly through the course below the top of all of the gates and within ine boundries of the course and through the exit gate and stop the timing sensor. The speed in 1,000 of a second is the achieved time.

Penalties

All Events: must stay below the top of entrance gate or the score is zero.

In Accuracy, penalties are awarded in the landing phase if the competitor fails to make a stand-up landing or is not in the central zone with their first touch.

In Distance, penalties are awarded for not staying below the gate at 70m.

In Speed, penalties are awarded for not draging water before the entry gate. Also for not staying below the top of all of the gates and not staying with in the boundries set be the gates. The canpoy must not touch the ground before scoring the sensor.

Freestyle, not touching water at some point.
