Background Information
Description

Gymnastics is an artistic sport that requires balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination and endurance. The sport embraces eight different disciplines, of which five are on the programme of The World Games.

Acrobatic Gymnastics is equal parts performance and partnership, as groups of gymnasts work together to complete spectacular and extraordinary feats. Acrobatic Gymnastics elements highlight balance, flight and flexibility. Partners, Trios and Groups must work together, each taking full advantage of the others’ strengths, to successfully perform these moves to music.

At The World Games, Acrobatic Gymnasts compete in up to all five categories.

Goal

Pairs and groups receiving the highest score after their performance will be ranked first.

Format

- All six partnerships perform two exercises, one each in Dynamic and Balance.

- Four top teams qualify for finals to perform one combined exercise.

- The best athletes will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Rundown

Partnerships perform a routine to music, specifically choreographed for them. The gymnasts carry out their acrobatic moves and combine them with dance, all in time to and in keeping with the style of the music. In each routine, athletes need to perform eight difficulty elements, consisting of handstands, footstands, saltos and twisting.

Each pair or group performs two routines in the qualifications with a different emphasis.

A 'balance' routine, focusing on statics holds requiring strength, poise and flexibility is followed by a 'dynamic' routine focusing on throws, somersaults and catches

In the finals, a 'combined' routine is performed, including elements from both balance and dynamic.

In case of a tie in points at any place in Qualification, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The highest sum of the E-scores of the Balance and Dynamic exercises prevails.
2. The highest sum of the E- and A-scores of the Balance and Dynamic exercises prevails.
If there is still a tie, the tie will not be broken and the starting order for the finals will be decided by
draw.

In case of a tie in points at any place in Finals, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The highest E-score of the Combined exercise prevails.
2 The highest sum of the E- and A-scores of the Combined exercise prevails.
If there is still a tie, the tie will not be broken.

Tactics

In each partnership, the gymnasts' different sizes and abilities will be balanced to complement each other in order to carry out the complex moves. Some will mainly carry out supporting and pitching roles, and are known as bases. They are then balanced with usually smaller gymnasts, who become the 'tops'. In men's and women's groups there are also one or two 'middles', who are like another base who will usually support the top while balancing on the base.

Judging

Gymnasts are judged on difficulty of elements, stability, skill execution, correctness of line and shape, control on landings, and artistry. There are two types of judges.

- The execution judges evaluate the correct form and technical execution of the elements.

- The artistry judges consider the overall impression of the choreographed routine following criteria such as musical interpretation, structure of the exercise and execution of the choreography, as well as the presentation of the athletes.

Deductions are given for falls, wobbles or hesitations as well as incomplete elements.

More information on the judges can be found here.

Scoring

The final score of a routine is the sum of the difficulty score, artistic score and execution score.

The difficulty is usually scored out of 10. However, there is no maximum score.

The artistic score is scored out of 10.

The execution score has a starting value of 10 points and is later doubled to emphasize its importance (20 points in total).

Scores over thirty are not uncommon, as difficulty points are not limited.
