Description |
Fistball is a team sport in which two teams of 5 players play a ball with their fist over a net. Each team’s aim is to strike the ball across the net in a way that the opponent fails to return, similar to the way it is done in volleyball. Each failed return by a team counts as a point for the opponent. Unlike other net sports, the ball is allowed to bounce once on the ground before being hit. It can bounce once between each point of contact, up to three total contacts. |
Goal |
The team winning three sets (best of 5) will be declared the winner of the match. In the medal matches, teams need to win four sets (best of 7). |
Format |
Men's Fistball · Two groups of four teams with round-robin games · 4th placed teams from both groups compete for the 7th position. · 3rd placed teams from both groups compete for the 5th position. · The two best teams from each group qualify for crossed semi-finals. · Losing semi-finalists compete for Bronze. Women’s Fistball · Two groups of three teams with round-robin games · 3rd placed teams from both groups compete for the 5th position. · The two best teams from each group qualify for crossed semi-finals. · Losing semi-finalists compete for Bronze. |
Rundown |
The service may be carried out by any player and is made from near the net (3 m from the net). Defenders are not allowed to block it directly. The ball is struck with a player’s fist or arm, but never with an open hand. After clearing the net, the ball may be contacted up to three times, with a bounce being permissible before each contact, but no repeat hits by any individual player are allowed within the three attempts. A point is awarded when the ball is hit out of the playing area without bouncing inside, or if the ball bounces twice in the playing area. A team wins a set if it has won 11 points by a margin of at least two points; otherwise, play continues until one team leads by two points. A set ends as soon as one team has won 15 points regardless of the margin, e.g. 15:14. Should a decisive set be required, lots are drawn again. As soon as one team wins 6 points, a change of ends, choice of ball and a service change are made. |
Tactics |
Substitutions can be made at any number of times and at any point of time, except during an ongoing rally. The service may be carried out running, jumping, standing or walking. There are different team formations depending on the opponent's tactics (U formation, X formation, V formation) |
Judging |
Each match is supervised by a referee, who is assisted by two linesmen and one scorer. Faults are only scored during a rally. Faults are committed if: |
Scoring |
A team can win a set by scoring 11 points (at a difference of at least two points). If the score reaches 14-14 in a set, then the team that gets to 15 first wins the set, irrespective of the score difference. The winner of the match is the team that has won three (best of 5) or four sets (best of 7). |
Penalties |
The referee has the right to penalize unsportsman-like behaviour in the following way, according to the severeness of the offence: · caution (yellow card) · suspension until both teams together have won 10 points (yellow and red card) · disqualification (red card) |
