Description |
Underwater has one discipline offered in The World Games: Finswimming. Finswimming is the progression with monofin or with two (bi-)fins either on the surface using a snorkel or underwater by holding one's breath, by means of the swimmers' muscular force only and without use of any mechanism, not even muscle powered. There are 3 categories of Finswimming events in The World Games: Apnoea, Surface and Bi-fins. |
Goal |
Athletes swim as fast as possible from one side of the pool to the other side, completing the pre-defined distance in the specific event. |
Format |
- No qualifying rounds. All events will have straight finals. - The best three athletes or teams of each competition will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze. |
Rundown |
Before the start of competition, athletes will prepare for the starting from a starting block. A long whistle is followed by the starter commands and the start signal for all athletes to dive into the swimming pool. APNOEA (2 Events)Apnoea swimming is underwater swimming using a mask or goggles, a monofin and by holding one’s breath. Races are held for the distance of 50 meters. A swimmer’s face must be immersed for the duration of the race, or they risk disqualification. BI-FINS (4 Events)Bi-fins swimming is an event where athletes swim on the surface of the water with a mask or goggles, snorkel and a pair of fins using a crawling style. Races are held for distances of 50 and 100 meters. Swimmers must remain on the surface of the water at all times for the duration of the race, except when starting or making turns at the end of the swimming pool (where an immersion of a distance of 15 meters is permitted). SURFACE (10 Events)Surface swimming is swimming on the surface of the water using a mask or goggles, snorkel and monofins. Races are held for distances of 100, 200, 400, 4 x 50 and 4 × 100 relay (meters). Swimmers must remain on the surface of the water at all times for the duration of the race, except when starting or making turns at the end of the swimming pool (where an immersion over a distance of 15 meters is permitted). |
Judging |
In all races, swimmers must at each turn make physical contact with a part of the body or the equipment with the extreme end of the pool. In apnoea, the immersion in apnoea is only permitted in swimming pools. The judge must be able to follow the movement of the swimmer visually. While in apnoea, the face of the swimmer must be underwater during the whole distance. In surface swimming, immersion is only permitted over 15 meters after the start and after each turn. The snorkel or the head of the swimmer have to go out from the water before the end of the 15 meters strip. Outside the 15 meters zone, a part of the swimmer or the equipment must always emerge from the water surface. |
Penalties |
The swimmer who loses part of his/her equipment, fin(s), snorkel, breathing apparatus during the race is disqualified on arrival. At the relay races, a team is disqualified if the feet or the fins of the next starting swimmer have already left the starting block before the arriving swimmer has touched the wall of the pool; the team isn’t disqualified if the starting swimmer notices his mistake and returns to the wall and starts again. It’s not necessary to climb onto the starting block. Any swimmer crossing his/her lane or who hinders another swimmer by any other means will be disqualified. If this behaviour is intentional, the chief judge must report the matter to the CMAS Technical Delegate and to the national federation of the swimmer. |
