Description |
Artistic Skating is a sport similar to figure skating, except done on roller skates. Combining artistry with refined strength and training, Artistic Skating is a dynamic and engaging sport. At The World Games 2022, athletes will compete in two Artistic disciplines. Free Skating incorporates jumps, spins and footwork into a program set to music. Couples Dance brings together two skaters performing innovative lifts and dance elements, all set to music. |
Goal |
The athlete/team with the highest combined score of difficulty and execution at the end of the two performances in short and long programme will win the competition. |
Format |
- No qualifying rounds. - All competitors in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed events will perform the short programme and the long programme. - The best three athletes/couples after both performances will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze. |
Rundown |
FreeskatingIn Freeskating, the competitors perform two routines. The first is called the 'Short Programme' and the second is the 'Long Programme'. The short programme has a set of elements the skater must perform, these are pre-decided and are common for all competitors. No additional elements may be skated. In the long programme, skaters are free to perform the elements they like, even if the number is limited. A jump cannot be performed more than three times, they have to perform at least two spins and a step sequence. In addition, they can perform combinations of jumps with minimum three and maximum five jumps for a total of 8 jumps for women and 9 jumps for men. The scores from the short and long programme are added together to get the final score for each competitor/pair for that round. A high score is achieved through good execution of performance routines. The tougher the routine chosen by the performer/pair, the higher the difficulty score. However, a failure to execute a tougher routine will reduce the execution score. Couple DanceThis event shall be conducted for teams consisting of two (2) contestants, one male, one female. In Couple Dance, the competitors perform two routines, 'style dance' and 'free dance'. The duration of the style dance will be about 3:00 minutes. The number of require elements in a style dance are four (4), including dance lift and a pattern dance sequence. More information can be found in the Rules for Dance on p. 6. The duration of the free dance will be about 3:50 minutes. The number of required elements in a free dance are seven (7). More information can be found in the Rules for Dance on p. 7. |
Tactics |
Artistic free skating incorporates figure skating jumps, spins, and footwork into a programme set to music. Most of the jumps done by freestyle roller skaters are similar to those performed in ice skating, with some nomenclature changed. It is more common in roller skating programmes to do lengthy multi-jump combinations. The Euler is a useful connecting jump in such sequences; for example, a five-jump combination might be Axel, loop, double toe loop, Euler, and double flip. The hardest part of a five-jump combination is usually keeping up enough speed to complete the fifth jump, which can sometimes be the most technically difficult. Roller skating also traditionally emphasizes spins that are uncommon on ice. Additionally, the inverted camel is generally performed by women; few men learn to do it, and even fewer perform it in competition. Other spins popular in roller skating that would be impossible to do with the blades of an ice skate is the heel camel spin, which is only rotated on the back two wheels, or heel. |
Judging |
Five international judges score a performance out of 10 in the short programme and the long programme. In Artistic Skating, Free - Pairs, penalties are applied by the judges for skating elements missing or performed in addition to what the rules state. In all artistic competitions, including official training, the costumes for both women and men should not embarrass the skater; penalties resulting from the violation of the costume rules will be deducted after the score has been assigned by the judges and will be deducted from the Artistic Impression mark. More information on the technical elements can be found Rules for Solo Dance, on pp. 6-12 as well as the Rules for Dance on pp. 8-20. More information on judges can be found in the Rules for Solo Dance, on p. 22-28 as well as the Rules for Dance on pp. 21-23. |
Scoring |
The scores are divided into Artistic Points and Technical Points. The scoring in the short programme round is based on execution only, given that all competitors/pairs perform the exact same elements. The scores from the short and long programme are added together to get the final score for each competitor/pair for that round. |
Penalties |
Information on penalties can be found in the Rules for Solo Dance, on pp. 15-16 as well as the Rules for Dance on pp. 23-24. |
