Background Information
Rock 'n' Roll
Description

DanceSport is a sport that was once referred to as competitive ballroom dancing. Its characteristics consist of physical strength, agility, coordination, stamina, a high level of fitness, discipline, teamwork, grace, style and musical interpretation.

There are four disciplines of DanceSport offered in The World Games: Latin, Rock‘n’Roll, Standard and Breaking. Each of these dances is performed to the prescribed music and tempo by dancers demonstrating not only proper technique, but also poise, power, floor craft and other criteria that reflect the quality of their dancing.

Rock’n’Roll is a very athletic, competitive form of dance that originated from the Lindy Hop. This is a very fast and physically demanding dance. The main features of Rock’n’Roll dance are its kicks and acrobatic elements such as lifts, jumps, throws and flips.

Goal

The winner is determined by the highest score at the end of the performance.

Format

- Three qualification rounds will be danced with heats of two couples each.

- The first round is danced in seven heats. Six couples will qualify for the semi-final.

- The runners-up round is danced in four heats. Another six couples will be selected for the semi-final.

- The semi-final will be danced in six heats. Six couples will be selected for the final.

- In the final, all six couples will perform two dances, one by one, in the disciplines of footwork and acrobatic.

Rundown

Couples, either alone or in groups, enter the stage to do their performance.  Every group has 15 seconds to enter the floor and 15 seconds to leave it. Afterwards, music is turned on and couples may start competing.

At the end of the group performance, athletes will immediately leave the dance floor. At the end of individual performances, athletes will wait on the dancefloor to receive their score.

In Rock'n'Roll, three (3) qualification rounds will be danced. All these rounds are danced in the discipline acrobatic Rock'n'Roll.

In the final, 6 couples will dance in 6 heats (one by one). This round will be dance in the discipline footwork and acrobatic.

Judging

The new Judging System Rock'n'Roll will be applied.

Scoring

Scoring in Rock’n’Roll is done keeping five criteria in mind.

Basic Step (max 20 points)
Technical points - starting from maximum. Based on the technical expectations and regulations, it is rather objective.

Dance Figures (max 25 points)
How do they present? - Accuracy, Difficulty, Variety, Art/Harmony Artistic points. It includes the accuracy and aesthetics of performing the dance figures.

Choreography (max 20 points)
What do they present? - Ideas, Difficulty, Variety, Art/Harmony Artistic points but it is vital that the technical expectations/regulations of compiling the choreography be taken into consideration as well.

Acrobatics (max 65 points)
Couples must perform 6 acrobatic elements from at least four different obligatory groups (elements forward, backward, dives and rotations). Maximum two of these 6 elements can be done as combinations of different elements. The top priority in judging acrobatics is safety and correct technique, aesthetics, and fluidity of execution.

Rhythm Mistakes
- Opposite rhythm, uncontrolled dance movements, break of the dance (one or both dancers), fall down in dance.

Small : -5 points
Big : -10 points
Restart : -30 points
Fall down in acrobatics: -30 points

Penalties

Athletes will be disqualified if they do not comply with the WDSF Dress regulations or WDSF Competition Rules and Regulations. Disqualification will be the decision of the Chairperson of adjudicators for each event.

Standard
Description

The Standard discipline (DanceSport) is a sport that was once referred to as competitive ballroom dancing. Its characteristics consist of physical strength, agility, coordination, stamina, a high level of fitness, discipline, teamwork, grace, style and musical interpretation.

The five Standard dances are the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep. Somewhat more formal than their Latin counterparts - and not just in terms of the athletes' attire - they are generally danced in a closed position of the partners. The hold a Standard dance commences with is maintained throughout.

More information about historical development of the WDSF may be found here.

Goal

The winner is determined by the highest score at the end of the performance. These scores are composed by 4 components TQ (Technical Quality) MM (Movement to Music) PS ( Partnering Skills) and CP (Choreography and Presentation). The sum of all 4 components will give a final score which will determine the winner.

Format

- 23 couples will perform all five (5) dances in a group during the first round. The dances will be divided into four (4) heats of a similar size (five and six couples each). Fourteen (14) couples will directly qualify for the semi-final.

- Fourteen (14) couples will perform all five (dance) in the semi-final. The dances will be divided into two heats of seven (7) couples each. Six couples will qualify for the final.

- In the final, the order of performance by each couple is decided by a draw. Each of the six (6) couples will have to dance individually three (3) Solo dances and two (2) Group dances.

Rundown

Couples, either alone or in groups, enter the stage to do their performance. When the couples take their positions on the dancefloor, music is turned on and couples may start competing.

Every group has 15 seconds to enter the floor and 15 seconds to leave it.

The music will be played approx. for 1 minute and 45 seconds in each round, except for solo dances in the final round when the music will be played only for 1 minute and 15 seconds.

The order of performance for Solo dances will be decided by a draw for finalists.

Results will be displayed almost immediately after each round on the overhead screen in the arena.

Tactics

Floorcraft is one of the most important tactics for Standard discipline. Floorcraft is the ability to choose the best positioning on the dancefloor and during the competition to avoid any possible collisions between couples to continue performing to the best abilities the couple may show.

Judging

12 adjudicators from 12 different countries will judge the event. The WDSF AJS (Absolute Judging System) will be used to manage the scores.

Computer scrutineering system will be used with adjudicators using electronic devised (PDA or Table). Results will be displayed almost immediately after each round on the overhead screen in the arena.

Adjudicators will need to have enough time to evaluate each couple based on 4 components. The combination of 2 components is randomly selected for each Adjudicator.

Four following components will be judged by Adjudicators:

TQ ( Technical Qualities)

MM (Movement to Music)

PS (Partnering Skills)

CP (Choreography and Presentation)

More information regarding Competition Rules may be found here (pages 27- 42).

Scoring

The scores will be allocated for each of the four components, from 1 to 10.

Penalties

Athletes will be disqualified if they do not comply with the WDSF Dress regulations or WDSF Competition Rules and Regulations. Disqualification will be the decision of the Chairperson of adjudicators for each event.

All scores and results will be published immediately after each event. The Chairperson of adjudicators will oversee the conduct of the entire event. Protest if any will be handled by the Chairperson. Appeal if any will be handled by WDSF Disciplinary Council after the event.

Latin
Description

The Latin discipline (DanceSport) is a sport that was once referred to as competitive ballroom dancing. Its characteristics consist of physical strength, agility, coordination, stamina, a high level of fitness, discipline, teamwork, grace, style and musical interpretation.

The five Latin dances are the Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive. With their heritage in Latin American (Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba), Hispanic (Paso Doble) and American (Jive) cultures, they each have their distinguishing traits but coincide in expressiveness, intensity and energy.
