Description |
Lifesaving is a sport practised in both indoor swimming pools and on open beaches, and requires participants to be trained as pool and beach lifeguards. The sport consists of a series of competition disciplines intended to develop and demonstrate lifesaving skills, fitness and motivation. Lifesaving is a humanitarian activity from which this vibrant, highly-skilled and exciting sport has developed. All athletes must obtain their nation’s minimum lifesaving/lifeguarding qualification before they can participate. Lifesaving tests an athlete’s skills in rescue, accident prevention and emergency care. The events of Lifesaving replicate common rescue techniques, including manikin (i.e. victim) “carry” with or without fins, manikin tow using a rescue tube, an obstacle swim and a super lifesaver combining the carry and tow disciplines in the same race. Team events replicate these skills in a relay format. In The World Games 2022, only events from the pool disciplines are conducted. |
Goal |
The pool competition is a timed competition. Athletes swim as fast as possible from one side of the pool to the other side, completing the pre-defined distance. Some events require the competitor to swim underwater, and “surface” with a manikin retrieved from the floor of the pool. |
Format |
- No qualifying rounds. All events will have straight finals. - The best three athletes or teams of each competition will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze. |
Rundown |
50 m Manikin Carry:With a dive start on an audible signal, the competitor races 25 m freestyle and then dives to recover a submerged manikin to the surface within 5 m of the pick-up line. The competitor then carries the manikin to touch the finish edge of the pool. 100 m Manikin Carry with Fins:Competitors are allowed the use of fins on their feet, which allow them to go quicker. With a dive start on audible signal, the competitor races 50 m freestyle wearing fins and then recovers a submerged manikin, located on the floor of the pool by the turn wall, to the surface within 10 m of the turning edge. The competitor carries the manikin to touch the finish edge of the pool. The competitor may swim the first 50 m underwater and is not required to surface until they have recovered the manikin. 200 m Obstacle Swim:Two obstacles are placed in each lane, 12.5 m from the start edge and 12.5 m from the turn edge With a dive entry on an audible signal, the competitor races the 200 m course passing eight times under the immersed obstacle to touch the finish edge of the pool. Competitors must surface after the dive entry before the first obstacle; after passing under each obstacle; and after a turn prior to passing under an obstacle. 200 m Super Lifesaver:With a dive entry on an audible signal, the competitor races 75 m freestyle and then dives to recover a submerged manikin placed on the floor of the pool at the 25 m distance. The competitor surfaces the manikin within the 5 m pick-up zone and carries it to the turning wall. After touching the wall, the competitor releases the manikin. While remaining n the water, the competitor dons fins and rescue tube and races 50 m freestyle with fins and rescue tube. After touching the turn wall, and within the 10 m pick-up zone, the competitor fixes the rescue tube correctly around a manikin and tows it 50 m to the finish. 100 m Manikin tow with fins:With a dive start on an audible signal, the competitor races 50 m freestyle with fins and rescue tube. After touching the turning wall, and within the 10 m pick-up zone, the competitor fixes the rescue tube correctly around a manikin and tows it to the finish. The event is complete when the competitor touches the finish edge of the pool. 4x25 m Manikin RelayFour competitors in turn carry a manikin approximately 25 m each. The first competitor carries the manikin and passes it on to their teammate at the 25 m mark. The second team member then swims to the end of the pool where the third teammate takes over and swims to the middle of the pool where the fourth member takes over the manikin. The event is complete when the fourth member touches the finishing edge of the pool, still holding the manikin. 4x50m Obstacle RelayEach member of the team goes from one end of the pool to the other (50 m), swimming under two obstacles. They must surface before and after passing under each obstacle. Once the first team member completes the 50 m, the second can begin and so on. Each team member has to navigate under 2 obstacles within the 50 m. The event is complete when the fourth member touches the finishing edge of the pool. 4x50m Medley RelayThe first competitor swims 50 m freestyle without fins. The second competitor swims 50 m freestyle with fins. The third competitor swims 50 m freestyle pulling a rescue tube and after having touched the wall, passes the harness of the rescue tube to a fourth competitor who wears fins. The third competitor, now playing the role of “victim”, holds the rescue tube with both hands, while being towed 50 m by the fourth competitor to the finish. More information on starts can be found here. More information on the event description can be found here. |
Judging |
Obstacle Swim: Competitors must surface after the dive entry before the obstacle; after passing under each obstacle; and after a turn prior to passing under an obstacle. Competitors may push off the pool bottom when surfacing from under each of the obstacles. Manikin Carry: Competitor’s need not touch the turn wall/edge of the pool when recovering the manikin (100 m Manikin Carry with Fins). Manikin Tow: After touching the turn wall/edge, and within the 10 m pick-up zone, the competitor fixes the rescue tube correctly around a manikin and tows it to the finish. The line of the rescue tube must become fully extended as soon as possible, and before the top of the manikin’s head passes the 10 m line. Super Lifesaver: While remaining in the water, the competitor dons fins and rescue tube and swims 75 m freestyle. After touching the wall/edge, and within the 10 m pick-up zone, the competitor fixes the rescue tube correctly around a manikin and tows it to the finish. The line of the rescue tube must become fully extended as soon as possible and before the top of the manikin’s head passes the 10 m line. Manikin Relay: Competitors must remain in the water at the surface in their lanes and designated changeover zone, until the completion of the event has been signalled.
