Description |
Bowling is a target sport in which a player rolls a ball toward pins with the goal of knocking over pins on a long playing surface, known as a lane. The objective is to knock down all ten pins on the first roll of the ball (a strike), or failing that, on the second roll (a spare). The number of pins knocked down equate to the score of the competitor on that roll. |
Goal |
The winner of a game is the competitor or the team that scores more points than the opponents over ten frames. To win a match, athletes need to win several games. During The World Games, In Singles and Doubles, a match is played best of three Games. |
Format |
Singles Format- 32 athletes per gender divided into two groups of 16. Doubles Format- 16 double teams per gender. |
Rundown |
A game of ten-pins consists of ten frames. Competitors try to knock down all ten pins on the first roll of the ball. Unless a strike is scored, players deliver a second ball in each frame. In the tenth frame, a player may deliver three balls if one or two strikes, or a spare, are scored. If athletes manage to knock down all ten pins, bonus points related to the next (spare) or next two (strike) throws are given. The maximum score in ten-pin bowling is 300. This can happen by achieving 12 strikes in a row in one game. |
Tactics |
To get optimum angles to achieve strikes on the long and narrow lane, bowlers impart side rotation to hook (curve) the ball into the pins rather than straight-line balls. |
Judging |
A foul occurs when a part of the player’s person encroaches on or goes beyond the foul line and touches any part of the lane, equipment or building during or after a delivery. When a foul is recorded, the delivery counts, but the player is not credited with any pins knocked down by that delivery. Pins knocked down by the ball when the foul occurred must be re-spotted if the player who fouled is entitled to additional deliveries in the frame. |
Scoring |
Every pin counts for one point. Ten points are awarded for strikes and spares, plus the number of pins knocked down on the player’s next two deliveries (one delivery for a spare). |
Penalties |
A player/team failing to observe a rule(s) shall be warned by an authorized tournament official with a yellow card for first offence (no penalty). For a second offence in the same tournament, the player/team will be disqualified from the tournament. |
